During the 2023 One MusicFest, SOHH had the opportunity to have a sit-down with Trina, where she opened up about her healing after the tragic passing of her mother and niece.
Throughout the interview, the Miami rapper expressed the difficulties of enduring pain and grieving the loss of her loved ones. Reflecting on the passing of her niece in 2022 and the death of her mother in 2019, she shared the overwhelming shock and disbelief she felt. Trina emphasized:
“I feel like we all at some point have to endure pain. Losing my niece that was 17 years old in 2019 I think my mom… A way to explain it. This is your mom. Like my mom’s not here? Like what? It doesn’t register. It doesn’t sink in. I think sometimes now it doesn’t you just have to process and find a place inside of you that’s just allows you to move forward. It’s nothing nobody can say. It’s no prayer and no counseling in the world that can stop what you feel.”
Trina’s niece, Toni Chester, tragically lost her life in 2022 due to gun violence in Liberty City, Miami. The rapper described her dear late niece:
“She’s just like a reflection of me. That was my everyday — looking for hair, looking for this, ‘I need something online,’ how to fix the new phone, the latest whatever. She was just, like, always there, so it’s a big void, terribly. To think there’s a second life after that, it’s not, so yeah, it’s just the very thing that’s just terrible.”
Similarly, the “Single Again” rapper experienced the loss of her mother, Vernessa “Nessa” Taylor, to cancer in 2019. These devastating losses have undoubtedly shaped Trina’s perspective on life and propelled her toward advocating for mental health and support for those going through similar experiences.
In the face of immense grief, Trina has chosen to speak out about the importance of mental health. By sharing her story and struggles, she hopes to provide support and a voice for those who may be going through similar traumas.
Trina’s advocacy for mental health is not only a way for her to cope with the tragic losses she has experienced but also a means to raise awareness and provide comfort to others who are navigating their own healing journeys.
During the 2023 One Musicfest, Trina also discussed the state of today’s female rappers in an interview with SOHH.
As a strong advocate for women’s empowerment in hip-hop, she shared her thoughts on the criticism of newer artists such as Sukihana and Sexyy Red, emphasizing the importance of female empowerment in music.
In a similar vein, former Migos group member, Quavo, recently opened up about how he had been coping with the sudden passing of his group mate, Takeoff. During an emotional interview with journalist Shannon Sharp, Quavo revealed the challenges he faced in dealing with the tragedy.
