Timbaland is currently facing intense backlash after making insensitive comments about Britney Spears.
During a Q&A session at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts on October 29, the Grammy-winning producer responded to a fan’s comment about Justin Timberlake’s 2002 hit song “Cry Me A River” suggesting that Timberlake should have silenced Spears. Timbaland produced the song, which was labeled as a breakup song about the pop icon.
The fans’ comment stemmed from Britney Spears’ new memoir The Woman In Me, which recently made headlines for her allegations about Timberlake, including claims of being urged to get an abortion during their relationship.” He stated:
“I wanted to call and say, ‘JT, you gotta put a muzzle on that girl.’ But you know what? We live in an age of social media and everybody wanna go viral. I get it, because that’s the way you make money. Go viral.”
Users on Twitter (X) reacted to Timbaland’s comment with one user saying “I’m glad britney is speaking up, their reactions are just proving that everything she said is true.” Another user commented, “why do men feel like they can silence women he’s a weirdo.”
On Nov. 7, Timbaland issued an apology to Spears during a TikTok live session:
“That wasn’t a joke, that wasn’t a nice thing to say. I apologize to the Britney fans and her,” Timbaland said.
In the midst of the backlash for his remarks about Spears, Timbaland’s controversial past has resurfaced. Users on social media highlighted a 2011 interview in which Timbaland expressed being “in love” with the late singer Aaliyah when she was just 16 years old and he was 23.
Additionally, in a past interview, the Virginia native claimed that he married his first wife, Monique Idlett because she resembled the late songstress. One user posted the clip, commenting, “Just came here to remind y’all Timbaland is a creep.”
Another singer who has clashed with Timbaland is Tink, who accused him of hindering her career while she was signed to Mosley Music Group’s label.
The “Million” singer claimed that her time on the label was marked by stagnation, as she was unable to release an album. In 2017, Epic Records cut ties with Mosley Music Group, prompting Tink to follow suit.
In May 2023, he received backlash for his plans to launch an AI startup aimed at creating music using the voices of deceased artists. He even previewed an AI-generated song featuring the late rap legend, The Notorious B.I.G., which drew criticism from fans.
