Before the year is up, hip-hop fans will get a special holiday gift in the form of a new album from Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. But not just any album — the long-awaited sequel to Doggystyle.
Two years since teasing the album, Snoop and Dre are prepping for the release of the project, which comes with over 10 tracks and a handful of notable features.
But when exactly is the album dropping? Who are some of the features? And, most importantly, what’s the name of the album?
Well, we’re answering those questions and more below.
1. Snoop first teased the project back in 2022
During an appearance on Stephan A. Smith’s K[no]w Mercy podcast in October 2022, Snoop revealed that he and Dre were working together on a sequel to Doggystyle.
He said that the pair had been recording it for the “past two months” and it was set to arrive in November 2023 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Doggystyle (which clearly didn’t happen).
He also revealed that the project would be named Missionary, and offered a simple explanation why: “The first album was Doggystyle.”
2. The album will be dropping on December 13
In October this year, Snoop revealed the release date for Missionary in a cheeky trailer.
3. It will consist of 15 tracks
A tracklisting on Amazon shows that Missionary will be 15 tracks long. In an August interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dre had said the album would be between 14 and 16 songs, saying, “I wanted 14 songs, Snoop wants 16, so we had that thing happening.”
4. It features a handful of music stars
Not only will Missionary include rap heavyweights like Method Man and 50 Cent, it’ll feature Jhene Aiko, Sting, Tom Petty, Jelly Roll and others, according to that same Amazon tracklist.
Meth shared that he’d be appearing on the album earlier this year during a Drink Champs interview.
“Every time I work with Dre, I feel like I need a do-over. The first time I was in the studio with him physically there, that chronic [hits] different. I spit a verse but it wasn’t up to par for me, so Dre was gracious enough not to put it out,” he said. “The second shot I got is for the Dre and Snoop joint coming up. Woo! He got a lot of fire shit on there, man.”
5. It will be the latest album released under Snoop as the head of Death Row Records
Back in February 2022, Snoop bought Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group in hopes of reviving the storied label.
The first album released under Death Row under Snoop’s leadership was his very own BODR. Since then, the label has released Jane Handcock’s World of Women, October London’s The Rebirth of Marvin and October Nights, Tha Dogg Pound’s W.A.W.G. (We All We Got) and others. But the biggest project thus far in the Snoop-Death Row era will surely be Missionary, which the label is releasing alongside Dre’s Aftermath and Interscope.
6. Two singles have been released from the album
November has seen the release of two singles from Missionary: “Outta Da Blue” and “Gorgeous.” The former features Dre and Alus, while the latter features Aiko.
