Tay-K has been found guilty of a lesser charge of murder in connection to the 2017 killing of Mark Saldivar.
On Friday (April 11), arguments from both sides ended in Tay-K’s second murder trial after two weeks of testimony. Following just over a day of deliberations, on Monday (April 14), the jury convicted the Texas rapper of murder in Bexar County Court. Tay-K, born Taymor McIntyre, was initially charged with capital murder in connection to the killing of Saldivar, who was robbed and shot in the parking lot of a San Antonio Chick-fil-A on April 23, 2017. Tay-K was found not guilty of the charge of capital murder. However, the jury was also given the option to convict on lesser charges of manslaughter or murder, with them choosing the latter.
During the reading of the verdict, which can be seen below, multiple people had to be removed from the courtroom after they audibly reacted to the news that Tay-K would not be convicted of the biggest charge of capital murder. He is expected to be sentenced this afternoon.
XXL has reached out to Tay-K’s attorney for comment.
During the trial, the jury heard testimony from Tay-K’s ex-girlfriend, Joanna Reyes, who was present during the incident. She told the court she witnessed Tay-K shoot Saldivar after the rapper and three other men, including Jaylen Bell, tried to rob Saldivar of camera equipment. Reyes was driving the SUV where the incident took place. She also testified that Tay-K and Bell were gleeful after the killing.
“They were going through [the victim’s] backpack and his wallet,” Reyes said. “They had got upset because it was only $10…They were kinda going back-and-forth. Then Jaylen applauded [Tay-K] and gave him a high-five. They high-fived each other. And Jaylen said, ‘You caught your first body.'”
Reyes, who was charged with witness tampering, received a suspended sentence in exchange for her testimony.
The conviction of capital murder would have meant a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. Tay-K is already serving a 55-year sentence after being convicted in 2019 for his role in the 2016 murder of Ethan Walker. Tay-K shot and killed Mark Saldivar while he was on the run for the Walker case, during which he released the infamous song “The Race.”
