I’m not a businessman. I’m a business, man.
While TMZ initially reported that Jay-Z would become part-owner of an NFL team in August 2019, things didn’t pan out that way. Instead, through his company Roc Nation, he works as the live music entertainment strategist — with a focus on planning the Super Bowl halftime shows and as a social justice partner.
Since the partnership began, Super Bowl Halftime shows have been decidedly more hip-hop. Beginning with Shkira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020, the show expanded to a hip-hop tribute involving Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar in 2022, to Rihanna, The Weeknd, Usher and most recently Kendrick Lamar.
From the original TMZ story, the site said they talked to people close to Jay, who said the legendary rapper will have a “significant ownership interest” in an NFL team. It has not been revealed what team Jay will be part owner of.
The source also said Jay wants to be part owner “because he’s a huge fan, already has a sports business and wants to continue to be a change agent for the NFL.”
What might make this complicated is his ownership stake in Roc Nation Sports. But, according to the source, “Jay is not an NFL agent and does not take part in the operations of the NFL players in Roc Nation.”
That week, it was announced that Roc Nation and the NFL entered in a partnership together. Roc Nation will reportedly help the league in the social-justice arena, as well as produce Super Bowl events.
Since the news came out, the reaction has been divisive, with many mentioning the fact that Colin Kaepernick still can’t get a job with an NFL team.
