A recent incident involving Candace Owens occurred on June 19 when she took to her Twitter account to publicly mock the Juneteenth holiday, referring to it as “ghetto and made up.” This tweet ignited a firestorm of backlash, with many accusing Owens of disrespecting an important commemoration of emancipation from slavery.
She stated that the Juneteenth holiday is meant to keep “Black America angry.” She also added:
“What this holiday is actually about is reminding Black Americans that we are somehow different, that this is not our country and that we should still be angry.”
This was not the first time Owens expressed anti-Black sentiments. In February 2021, she decried Black History Month as “ignorant people praising black figures without knowing what they did.” Owens dismissed the month-long celebration as ignorance and criticized those who celebrated without understanding the accomplishments of historical figures like Frederick Douglass.
Furthermore, Owens has been vocal in her disdain for the Black Lives Matter movement. In October 2022, she took to her Instagram account to denounce the movement and announced her intention to host a “Black Lives Matter funeral.” She referred to the movement as a “criminal enterprise” and aimed to expose what she believed to be fraudulent actions and narratives perpetuated by it.
In February 2023, Owens faced backlash again when she denied the role of slavery in the construction of the United States and disputed the South’s fight to preserve slavery during the Civil War. Her assertions contradict widely accepted historical accounts, prompting further criticism from historians and scholars.
Owens has attracted attention for her anti-Black remarks and has also engaged in celebrity feuds. In 2018, she credited Kanye West for designing merchandise for her Blexit movement, which encouraged Black Democrats to exit the party and join the Republican party.
In May 2023, Candace announced on her YouTube channel, Candace Owens Podcast, that she had no sympathy for Jordan Neely, a homeless subway rider who was brutally killed in a chokehold by a white ex-marine veteran. The podcast host admits she has no sympathy for Jordan Neely, stating that “he is clearly mentally ill.”
She continued, “a crazy person, Jordan Neely, 30 years old steps onto a subway and he says he doesn’t care if gets arrested, he doesn’t care if he goes to prison, he doesn’t care if he dies and of course he has a history of 42 arrests over the last ten years.” The commentator goes on to defend Daniel Penny – the ex-marine by labeling him a “hero”.
Additionally, Owens also faced backlash for body-shaming singer/rapper Lizzo and referring to her as “clinically obese.”
Owens’ controversial statements have elicited strong reactions from the public, with many condemning her views as divisive and harmful. However, some support her perspectives, leading to ongoing debates and discussions about the role of race and politics in society.
Candace Owens has not only given unsolicited information and commentary regarding Black movements and holidays, but she’s also done so regarding celebrities. Recently, Kanye West and JP Morgan Chase’s business relationship ended.
The reasons are not confirmed, but Candace Owens took it upon herself to share the private statement issued by the bank.
Amidst the controversies surrounding Candace Owens, another prominent figure has faced scrutiny. Kanye West, known for his own provocative statements, recently garnered attention for wearing a “White Lives Matter” hoodie during his YEEZY season 9 presentation in Paris.
