Chance The Rapper is getting ready to battle his former manager at trial in a case that includes allegations of unpaid wages and contract disputes.

The Chicago rapper’s issues with his previous manager, Pat Corcoran, have come to a head with both men heading to trial to settle their differences after a judge in Illinois denied Chance’s motion for summary judgment on March 26, Music Business Worldwide reported on Sunday (March 31). Pat initially sued Chance for $3 million in November of 2020. Pat, who had been working with Chance since 2012, claims he was terminated after the release of Chano’s 2019 album The Big Day Out. However, Chance failed to honor the terms of Pat’s work agreement.

Pat sued for “compensatory damages and exemplary damages for breach of their agreement, related violations of the Illinois Sales Representative Act,” as well as for attorney fees incurred from filing the lawsuit.

Chance countered in 2021 by filing a lawsuit against Pat, claiming he “repeatedly breached his fiduciary responsibilities to Mr. Bennett by trading on Mr. Bennett’s good name for his own benefit” and was a disgruntled employee.

The legal haggling continued. Pat countersued Chance for breach of contract. Chance then successfully got Pat’s initial lawsuit dismissed in July of 2021. However, the court allowed Pat to move forward with his claims that he is owed commissions for three years after they split.

“We respectfully believe that the Court incorrectly denied summary judgment, as there is no legal or factual basis for Mr. Corcoran or his entity to obtain additional compensation from Mr. Bennett or his entities for a full three years after Mr. Corcoran was fired,” Chance’s legal counsel said following last week’s order.

A trial date has not been set.

The upcoming court case comes two months after the rapper settled his divorce from his ex-wife Kirsten Corley.
