If Fat Joe and Jadakiss had it their way, Father’s Day would be a way more celebrated holiday. They got what they wanted when they themselves hosted a special Father’s Day lunch for 40 fathers this past Wednesday. Taking place at Manhattan’s famed Sei Less restaurant, the event invited 40 fathers who had been adversely affected by the criminal justice system. The event was put on in conjunction with REFORM Alliance, a criminal justice reform organization co-founded by Michael Rubin, Jay-Z, Michael Novogratz, Meek Mill, Daniel Loeb and Clara Wu Tsai.

For Joe, who shook hands and took pictures with the fathers and their families, it was a moment to right a cosmic wrong.

“Fathers that really want to do the job of a father never really get the right credit,” Fat Joe told Okayplayer. “We gotta salute the fathers. They play a big role. They’re there for their kids. I know there’s circumstances where a man and a woman don’t get along, but I do believe in fathers being in their kids’ life. And so it’s important to salute these guys. They’ve been through hell in life and they still here trying to be real men and real fathers.”

For his part, Jada noted the importance of helping fathers reintegrate into the world after time spent in prison. He hopes events like this one can help — even if it’s in a more symbolic way.

“It’s about these guys actually reconnecting with society,” says Jada, who began hosting a new podcast with Fat Joe last month. “Of course, where me and [Joey] Crack come from, there’s a lot of fathers that got caught up in the justice system and they want to get out and do the right thing by their kids and by their families,” he adds. “So an event like this is, if it doesn’t do anything else, at least it’ll put a little hope, a little fire back in them to get back in society and want to do the right thing.”
