During the violent incident at Howard University in Washington, D.C., students were left traumatized and severely injured. The assault occurred during the night of August 13 and extended into the early hours of August 14. While Howard students peacefully gathered outside residence halls, a mob of non-students attacked them.
The motives behind this unprovoked attack remain unknown. Witnesses revealed that one student was stabbed, and numerous others faced life-threatening injuries.
Fear and desperation consumed the students as they struggled to defend themselves, “I was prepared to die,” one unidentified Howard student said about the attack. “When I was on the ground getting stomped out, I just stopped feeling the pain at one point. “
Howard students who endured the brutal attack shared their terrifying experiences. One anonymous student, reflecting on the incident, expressed their preparedness to face death, as the pain numbed while stomped on.
Another student described the attackers as “a bunch of D.C. locals” and estimated their number to be somewhere “between 5 to 20 individuals.” Despite the outnumbered situation, the targeted students fought back as one lunged at them.
Heartbreakingly, while some escaped the escalating violence, others were left wounded and abandoned by the security personnel. The two unidentified Howard students say they escaped the brawl, but their other friends got left behind:
“He got stabbed in the back and he got just beat on by like 30 people, him by himself, and security looked at him on the ground, watched his body go limp, and just walked away. Didn’t call anybody; didn’t do anything.”
The reason for the attacks remains unclear.
Following the distressing incident, the Howard University campus police chief reported arresting one juvenile perpetrator with a handgun. The university police have initiated internal and external investigations to address the security breach and ensure the student body’s safety.
Howard University plans to implement additional security measures in response to the attack, including installing 1,000 more surveillance cameras across campus. They also aim to create designated safety paths for students and enforce the presence of security guards within 100 feet of safety zones.
Howard University students have dealt with controversy on campus before. In 2021, students protested at the university after reporting mold-infested dorms and poor living conditions.
Aside from this alarming incident at Howard University, it is unsettling to note that acts of unprovoked violence continue to occur. In a recent case, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Memphis man, was brutally attacked by five Memphis police officers.
