In anticipation of the second season of Rap Sh!t, the hit series created by Issa Rae and showrunner Syreeta Singleton, the duo sat down with SOHH and discussed the state of today’s female rap. Heading into the second season of Rap Sh!t, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton are excited about the current state of female rap. Issa Rae expressed:
“I hope it’s going to a place that is diversified. Like I love that Sexyy Red has a moment. I love that Ice Spice has a moment, and she’s been able to carry that moment. That’s hard to do. Like she, started off in a way that people took her as a joke and she made a whole career out of it.”
Syreeta Singleton chimed in, sharing her excitement about the abundance of female rap artists. She expressed:
“I’m excited by how many artists there are, I hope that continues to be a thing. It’s not like the singular perspective or voice. That’s exciting, I hope that continues. But I also do want to see people show more love to other artists. You know, you have your bangers, your club hits which we all love. But then I also think about Lady London. Her project right now is about zodiac signs and astrology, digging into that from a female rap perspective. I want to see more of that stuff being amplified.”
As Singleton mentioned Lady London, the emerging rapper has expressed her journey as an artist.
She recently released her project S.O.U.L., on Nov. 3, which focuses on exploring zodiac signs and examines love and relationships from a female rap perspective, as Syreeta Singleton mentioned. With regards to Rap Sh!t, the show not only contributes to and highlights the female rap renaissance but also provides a platform for rising artists.
Season two of the series features Sexyy Redd, who secured a spot on the soundtrack with her song “No Panties.” Lady London’s collaboration with Connie Diiamond and Hood Brat on the track “No Time” further showcases her talent and adds to the second season of Rap Sh!t’s soundtrack.
The state of female rap today continues to be a topic of discussion, with many emphasizing the importance of female empowerment in the genre. Iconic rapper Trina recently shared her thoughts on today’s female rappers, highlighting the need to uplift and support women in hip-hop.
