In February 2023, Pharrell Williams assumed the role of the new men’s creative director for Louis Vuitton. Following his appointment, Williams showcased his new designs in Paris, France, in an event that doubled as a tribute to his predecessor, the late designer Virgil Abloh.
PETA said they reached out to Williams when they found out about the $1 million made-to-order crocodile-skin bag called the “Millionaire Speedy.” PETA invited Williams to visit the pens in Asia where the crocs are abused, according to an investigative report. They told him to bring “nose plugs and high boots to wade through fetid, waste-filled water.”
PETA told TMZ, “We hoped animals would get lucky and that you would choose vegan fabrics, which are the preference of today’s ethical and environmentally conscious consumers. But we aren’t happy to note your newest design, the ‘Millionaire’ Speedy bag, which is crafted from crocodile skin because when it comes to animals being used for fashion, it isn’t beautiful — it’s abuse.”
Pharrell has not responded to PETA publicly.
PETA has been vocal in its condemnation of celebrities’ fashion choices. The org recently criticized Cardi B and Offset for their purchase of a crocodile Hermes Birkin bag.
