Although it’s been five years since her last album, Solange has assured fans that she’s working on new music.
In an interview with Vogue Australia, the singer offered an update on her next album, saying, “Honestly, I never stop making music. I’ve never stopped, and I’ll probably dedicate myself to it full time next year.”
“Over the past five years, I’ve focused on creating works that I hope will inspire and occupy a space-time far beyond my own existence. I’m preparing spiritually, physically, artistically, and mentally for my future self at 60 or 70,” she continued.
“I’m incredibly grateful for everything I’ve accomplished, even if it meant being a little uncomfortable in the moment,” she added. “I’ve built a library, created objects, published books, made sculptures, composed ballet music and created a performance program. It’s been a very rich time, but I must say I picked up the drums again a few weeks ago, and I feel like music is meant to capture the spirit. It freezes it in time like no other art form.”
The Houston singer’s last project was 2019’s When I Get Home, which was the follow-up to her brilliant 2016 album, A Seat at the Table.
Aside from her own music, she had a hand in Summer Walker’s Clear 2: Soft Life EP, co-producing the track “Agayu’s Revelation” alongside Steve Lacy.
Elsewhere in the interview, Solange shared how she’s a fan of Laila!, as well as why it was important that her mother, Tina Knowles, appeared on A Seat at the Table.
“Growing up, I think we see so much of ourselves in our parents’ past lives. We begin to connect the dots between nature and upbringing, past stories, and that guides us on how we want to evolve in the present,” she said. “I see so much of her in the way I am in the world: the way I want to express myself, the fact that I refuse to be silent, but also the way I allow myself to be human, to invite grace and poetry into my life. She is always part of my artistic process, even if it’s not always directly visible.”
