UPDATE (April 11):
Soulja Boy‘s attorney, Rickey Ivie, has released the following statement to XXL regarding the verdict of the rapper’s trial.
“We maintain that the evidence does not support the verdict,” the statement reads. “It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial. Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case.”
ORIGINAL POST (April 10):
Soulja Boy has been found liable in a civil trial where he was accused of kidnapping, rape and unpaid wages by his former assistant who he also had a relationship with. The jury hit him with over $4 million to pay the victim.
On Thursday (April 10), the Atlanta-bred rapper appeared in Santa Monica, Calif. court to learn his fate in the case. Following one day of deliberations, the jury concluded that Soulja is guilty of claims including assault, sexual battery and infliction of emotional distress. The jury did not find him liable for false imprisonment or hostile work environment, the other claims in the 2021 lawsuit.
In total, the jury awarded the victim just over $4 million in compensatory damages. The case now moves into the next phase of the trial, during which the jury will determine punitive damages. That could take place on Friday (April 11) or Monday (April 14). The accuser was seeking $73.6 million in damages. The verdict included just over $4 million in compensatory damages and $250,000 in punitive damages, according to Courthouse News. The unnamed victim also asked for another $4 million in punitive damages.
“We’re happy our client was vindicated and the jury believed her claims of physical and sexual assault,” the plaintiff’s attorney Ron Zambrano said in a statement to XXL. “We’re looking forward to moving on to the punitive damages phase of the case.”
Soulja was originally sued by the anonymous accuser on Jan. 21, 2021. The woman claims she was raped, beaten and held hostage by the 34-year-old rapper, who also subjected her to a hostile work environment and did not pay her the wages that she earned.
During the trial, the woman testified that she feared for her life and was subject to abuse on multiple occasions. “I feared for my life,” Doe told the jury, adding that Soulja Boy, born DeAndre Way, threatened to “send shooters” to the house. “I was scared of what he would do to my family. I didn’t want him to hurt anybody because of me,” she testified.
Soulja Boy also testified during the trial. He proclaimed his innocence, saying he never hired the woman and her accusations of abuse are flat-out lies for a payday.
XXL has reached out to Soulja Boy’s team and his attorney for comment.
