In March, Suge Knight’s attempt to have his 28-year prison sentence overturned was denied. The Death Row Records co-founder filed the appeal in 2023, but the judge recently ruled that he waited to long to file. Rolling Stone reported that the judge believed the filing to be “insincere,” but Knight’s lawyer blames the late filing on the COVID-19 pandemic and health issues that have seen Knight lose sight in one eye since his incarceration.

Suge Knight was sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter from a 2015 incident. He is currently serving his at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California.

The former Death Row Records CEO was charged with murder after he used his vehicle to run over two men at a Los Angeles restaurant parking lot in January of 2015.

The confrontation was captured on surveillance video near the set of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.

According to a report in local Los Angeles news station KABC, prosecutors say Knight proceeded to follow the two men to a nearby burger restaurant, where he ran over them with his pickup truck. One of the men, Terry Carter, died from his injuries. The other man, Cle Sloan, suffered injuries to his head and foot. Knight reportedly fled the scene of the incident before authorities arrived.

Knight, 53, had been facing the possibility of life in prison. He took the plea deal days before his trial was scheduled to begin.

According to a report in Consequence of Sound, he was also facing a second-degree robbery charge for a 2014 incident in which he and comedian Katt Williams were accused of stealing a paparazzi’s camera. Last year, Knight was indicted on charges of “threatening death or bodily injury” against Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray.

In 1997, he was sentenced to nine years in prison after violating his probation stemming from an earlier assault charge. He had been granted early release in 2001 but was sent back to prison in 2003 after assaulting a parking attendant.

Knight has reportedly been experiencing health issues in recent years and told the judge he expects to die in prison.
