Tyler, The Creator has had enough of podcasts. In a conversation with The Cut, the Grammy-winner voiced his disdain for the medium, where he explained that it’s given credence to less-than-credible voices.
“I think we give a lot of people who aren’t smart and just want attention platforms to be loud and incorrect, and other stupid people follow them,” he said. “Where are the people with skills? We need electricians, we need more drummers, painters, teachers. Everybody with a mic is crazy. I just think that sh– is gross. Deante Kyle is sick, and The Cutting Room Floor is sick. Those are two podcasts that are in the right direction.”
Tyler went on to explain that he doesn’t take his style or culture cues from outside sources and bemoaned the idea that we’re losing specificity of voice and presentation.
“I just discover shit on my own; everything is dead,” said Tyler. “You know what happened? Everyone wanted to be everything. You used to go to a website that was specifically about this type of music and now they’re posting about shoes. Nothing is specific anymore. It’s like, damn, I followed this page because they posted the illest Italian cars and now they’re talking about so-and-so’s new country song. We don’t need everything to be multimedia; be specific so we can go there. Everything wants to be everything, and everyone wants to be a part of everything. I don’t need to comment on shit that I’m not into. It’s not my style, so I don’t even pay attention to it.”
Back in May, the 34 year-old participated in a “Tyler Talk” panel for Converse in London, where he spoke about the importance of being “delusional” about creating and why artists need a team.
“To make stuff, you gotta be delusional,” he said. “And when you’re delusional, you need people around you that trust you. Because what the f–k they gon’ trust? You say some normal stuff like, ‘The sky is blue.’ Yeah, you don’t need people to trust you to say that. I’m delusional, but I knew what I wanted to do since I was 5 years old.”
When it comes to podcasting, Tyler, The Creator has made his contempt known. In a Billboard interview last year, Tyler said that if he were to ever become Commander-In-Chief, he’d do away with podcasts entirely. “If I was president…,” he said. “…the first thing I would do is take podcast mics away from n—as.”
