Walter Scott, co-lead singer of the legendary Whispers, has died. Scott was 81 years old and had reportedly been battling cancer for an undisclosed period of time. He fronted the long-running R&B group with his twin brother, Wallace “Scotty” Scott.

“We all are incredibly heartbroken,” Desirae L. Benson, a representative for The Whispers, shared in a statement. “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Walter Scott, beloved member of the legendary R&B group, The Whispers. His voice, presence, and contributions helped shape a musical legacy that touched millions. Walter’s impact on the industry and in the hearts of fans will never be forgotten. Memorial details will be shared at a later date. Sending love and light to his family, friends, and all of the millions of fans around the world. We lost a legend!”

The brothers formed the Whispers in Los Angeles with Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon in 1963. Harmon was replaced by Leaveil Degree in 1973. The began recording in the mid-1960s and found consistent success on Don Cornelius and Dick Griffey’s Soul Train label, but the group began to score hits in the late 1970s with Leon Sylvers-produced singles like “And the Beat Goes On” and “Olivia (Lost and Turned Out)” and 1980s hits like “It’s A Love Thing” and “Rock Steady.” Hutson died in 2000; Caldwell in 2016 and Harmon in 2023.

Along with their hits, The Whispers earned a reputation for their polished and entertaining live act; featuring the group’s distinct harmonies and choreography. They remained a top concert draw into the 2020s.

Questlove paid respects to Walter Scott upon the news of his passing.

“Love For Walter Scott of The Whispers,” Questo wrote on Instagram. “One of the most trusted voices in 70s soul music. He along [with] his twin Wallace ‘Scotty’ Scott rode the thin line of the common velvet smooth voice you were familiar with——like the talented uncle in the family….who btw could DUST you inna min w his dizzying blink & you lost him ‘squiggle gee doo dweedy’ scatlibs.”
